Karabots Junior Fellows Program
ANATOMY & ARMOR
The Karabots Junior Fellows Program has recently expanded to include a second round of students. This past summer 2011, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, through the Center for Education and Public Initiatives (CEPI) offered a two-week Summer Program as a means for recruitment. Eighteen students participated in this ‘Anatomy & Armor’ program which was inspired by the “Horse and Man Armors” on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The Anatomy & Armor program consisted of lessons in both human and horse functional anatomy; via tours and lessons at Drexel University’s Physical Therapy department and Cadaver lab, and The Veterinary Hospital of UPenn. Other lessons involved Armor design workshops, Dance and a visit to the PMA Armor galleries where the connection of the anatomy and the armor lessons came together as we viewed and tried on armor.
Most of the participants will be continuing into the full three year program and are now the newest Karabots Junior Fellows, (KJF2). This Fall, the KJF2 curriculum will focus on the field of forensic science.
Our original students, (KJF1), began in Summer 2009 and are now High-school Seniors! They will be attending SAT practice classes, and making college visits this Fall. Winter/Spring 2012 they will work on special projects and mentor the new Karabots Junior Fellows, (KJF2).
ABOUT THE KARABOTS PROGRAM
The Karabots Junior Fellows Program aims to use the resources of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia to provide practical assistance, mentoring, and academic and social support to a select group of Philadelphia high school students from communities under-represented in current healthcare professions. This three-year program is designed to facilitate their continuation into post-secondary education required for a career in healthcare. The Karabots Junior Fellows Program (KJF) was officially launched on June 1 2009 when Nick and Athena Karabots of The Karabots Foundation generously donated the first years funding for the program.

In October 2009 twenty-four 10th grade Philadelphia City high school students began as Karabots Junior Fellows at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. They will be participating in the KJF program from 10th to 12th grade. During the summer of 2010 they will participate in College Internships, and during their Junior year they will be matched with citywide externship programs in a variety of healthcare disciplines.
Participating students were selected through interviews and written applications. Here is an article about the Karabots program in The Philadelphia Inquirer, A Youthful Remedy, Aug. 24, 2010.

Najee with Athena & Nicholas Karabots
Amie Zimmerman from Arcadia University recently gave the Karabots Junior Fellows a drawing workshop in one of the most beautiful rooms in the College – Ashhurst. The room was bathed in natural light that enabled Amie to guide the students through a series of exercises drawing apples and eggs. They then moved on to more complex subject matter from the museum. The results were spectacular!
